Launching Careology Professional

July 23, 2020

Careology Professional transforms traditional cancer care by providing clinicians with previously unavailable patient health data and insights, collected from wearable devices and the Careology app, which Macmillan Cancer Support features on a shortlist of recommended services

Currently, clinicians have no means to remotely manage or proactively support patients going through gruelling and often extremely toxic treatment regimes. They have to rely on patients to get in touch if they have severe symptoms or side effects when at home, and their own recollection of how they were on particular days, in order to analyse the cumulative impact and complications of treatment, which as a snapshot, can often be unreliable.

With Careology Professional, clinicians can view patient health information including vital signs, systemic anti-cancer therapy (SACT) toxicities and medication adherence. This approach facilitates early and proactive clinical intervention which can help the patient feel more supported and ultimately has the potential to be life saving. Careology Professional will complement telehealth in a suite of new tools enabling effective prioritisation and population management.

Careology is committed to supporting the millions of people affected by cancer and has formed a dedicated NHS division, headed up by Dr. Henry Carleton. Henry has previously established two highly successful software businesses (Four Eyes Insight and Zircadian) which serviced large swathes of the NHS.

Dr Henry Carleton, Managing Director of Careology’s NHS Division, says:

“Having worked across the NHS for almost 25 years, I strongly believe that technology plays a crucial role in the delivery of safe, patient-centric and scalable care. Interruptions to the tried-and-tested model of cancer care delivery, centred on in-person consultations between patient and clinician, will have ripple effects as the UK comes tentatively out of lockdown. So now, more than ever before, health systems need to adapt their services in a cost-effective manner to provide better - and, in some cases, remote - care to patients whilst protecting both patients and clinicians from this pandemic.

Cancer is an extremely complex disease, one which ideally receives consistent, scheduled treatment with minimal disruption. With Careology Professional, clinicians now have access to a level of health data which has the power to improve clinical outcomes by facilitating early intervention, transform the patient experience and drive a more efficient model of service provision.”

Careology Professional extends the existing platform which allows patients to monitor their own health and better equips them to be more in control of their treatment. The business was founded by Fitbug creator, Paul Landau, who is using his 15 years of health tech experience to help patients navigate this daunting time, after his wife was diagnosed with cancer.

Paul Landau, Founder & CEO of Careology, says:

“Whilst my wife underwent her treatment, I saw first hand how little consumerised technology was available to support her. It was all too clear how digital technology needed to be used to provide support and reduce the burden placed on patients to report what can be time-critical symptoms or side effects from treatment. People often get this wrong, meaning issues become more advanced and complex than they would have done if identified early.

The introduction of Careology Professional will transform how patients and clinicians interact, ensuring patients no longer have to make decisions in isolation and that the relationship becomes collaborative. For the first time in cancer care, Careology’s platform gives clinical teams visibility and insights that enable them to work proactively and identify potential complications early. This is a step towards digital cancer care becoming the new standard.”

Careology, which featured in the UK’s Top 100 Startups for 2020, is also announcing the appointment of Carl Uminski as Chairman. Carl, is a digital industry pioneer and was voted ‘Most Influential Individual in Mobile’ by The Drum. Alongside Dr Henry Carleton, Carl joins former Bupa CEO Fergus Kee and Investor Director, Alan Marks, former NED of Receipt Bank on the board.

Careology’s advisory board includes a number of leading medical professionals, including Miss Joanna Franks, Consultant Breast and Oncoplastic Surgeon, The Wellington Hospital and University College London Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, and Dr Benjamin Taylor, Clinical Oncologist, Guy’s & St. Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust.

About Careology

Careology is building the world’s leading digital cancer care platform. By equipping and seamlessly connecting patients, caregivers and healthcare teams in a complex pathway, our mission is to use technology to transform traditional cancer care and change everyone’s cancer story for the better. Today the platform allows patients to manage and navigate all aspects of treatment from their device, while leveraging critical data on symptoms, medications, side effects and more, to deliver insight and analysis to clinical teams through a ‘virtual ward’. By increasing the potential for patients to self-serve, improving workflows, making 24/7 monitoring possible and putting a unique data set to work, we are helping to relieve pressure on health systems, while reducing costs, improving patient and clinician experience, and optimising health outcomes.
